What is AAC Communication?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication.

AAC includes tools and strategies that help people communicate when speech is difficult, limited, or unavailable.  But at its core, AAC is simple:

AAC is communication — just done with different tools.

Just like people communicate by talking, signing, or writing, many people communicate using:

Low-Tech AAC

These tools do not require electronics.

Examples include:

  • picture symbol boards

  • communication books

  • printed word or symbol cards

  • gestures and sign language

High-Tech AAC

These tools use technology to help people express themselves.

Examples include:

  • iPads with communication apps

  • speech-generating devices

  • eye-gaze systems

  • communication software

Many children and adults use apps like BoardMaker, TouchChat, Proloquo2Go or Pictello to share their ideas, tell stories, and connect with others.
